Masuma expands its product lineup with alternator overrunning pulleys (one-way clutches). These components are an important part of the charging system, ensuring stable alternator operation and overall reliability of the vehicle’s electrical system.
WHAT IS AN OVERRUNNING PULLEY
An overrunning pulley is a special pulley with an integrated mechanism that allows it to rotate freely in one direction while locking in the other. This design helps dampen vibrations and prevents sudden shocks when engine speed changes, especially during deceleration.
If a conventional pulley is installed instead of an overrunning pulley, the engine will begin to brake the alternator during rapid drops in RPM. This increases stress on the alternator itself, as well as on the drive belt, idler pulleys, and the belt tensioner.
A faulty overrunning pulley is one of the common causes of alternator malfunction. The component can be replaced separately, without the need to replace the entire alternator assembly.
MASUMA ALTERNATOR OVERRUNNING PULLEYS
There are two main types of alternator overrunning pulleys: OAP and OAD.
OAP (Overrunning Alternator Pulley) is the classic and reliable one-way clutch design. It allows the alternator rotor to continue spinning by inertia when engine speed drops, effectively reducing load on the drive belt.
OAD (Overrunning Alternator Decoupler) is a more complex design with an integrated torsional damper. It absorbs vibrations more effectively but is also more sensitive to contamination and wear.
Masuma offers classic OAP-type overrunning pulleys that meet original equipment standards. High-quality materials are used in production:
- toothed inner ring is made from 20Cr steel, a strong and wear-resistant alloy;
- clutch components are manufactured from GCr15 alloy bearing steel, ensuring long service life;
- seals are made from oil-resistant butyl rubber, designed to withstand the aggressive environment under the hood;
- outer ring is produced from 45-grade steel, capable of handling significant loads during long-term operation.
Masuma overrunning pulleys are manufactured with high precision, ensuring stable and quiet operation across different engine speeds.
In addition to OEM numbers and vehicle compatibility, the website provides detailed specifications for each pulley, including geometric dimensions (inner and outer diameter, length, pulley offset), number of ribs, and internal thread parameters.
The current Masuma lineup includes alternator overrunning pulleys for vehicles from ALFA ROMEO, BMW, CITROEN, FIAT, FORD, GENERAL MOTORS, HONDA, HYUNDAI, KIA, LAND ROVER, MAZDA, MERCEDES-BENZ, MITSUBISHI, NISSAN, PEUGEOT, PORSCHE, RENAULT, SUBARU, SUZUKI, TOYOTA, VAG, and VOLVO.
